RAMSEY — Got unwanted winter clothes? Two Ramsey High School students will take your donations through November for sale at their first-ever Thrift-a-Palooza to benefit Sustainable Jersey.
Seniors Emily Fosdick and Maddy Landel are organizing the event for a Distributive Education Clubs of America project for their Marketing II class. DECA's goal is to prepare high school and college students for careers in marketing, finance, hospitality and management.
"This project brings awareness to community members on the topic of sustainability and being more mindful of the frequency of their purchases and the waste they generate," Emily said.
Sustainable Jersey's website says the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency estimates that 85% of all discarded textiles are sent to landfills annually. The average American throws away 70 pounds of clothing and other textiles annually. Sustainable Jersey describes recycling non-mandated materials such as clothing as "essential to New Jersey achieving its goals of recycling 50% of the municipal solid waste stream and 60% of the total solid waste stream."
"During November, students can drop off clean used winter clothing to the front offices of the district's five schools," Maddy said. "For security reasons, parents and area residents should drop off donations at bins at the circulation desks inside the Ramsey, Mahwah and Wyckoff libraries."
To avoid damaged or missing clothing, donations should be brought to the buildings only when they are open and should not be left outside after hours, Maddy said. Students are collecting pants, shirts, sweatshirts, sweaters, hats, socks, coats and other winter-weight clothing.
The clothing will be sorted for sale at a pop-up thrift shop for students from Dec. 2 to 6 and for the public on Saturday, Dec. 7, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.
The high school is at 256 E. Main St. Saturday parking for the public sale on Dec. 7 will be on Prospect Street, on the south side of the high school, next to the Upper Gym.
